FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION IS THE MOST WIDELY ADOPTED METHOD FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN WEST GERMANY. IT REMAINED COMPETITIVE DESPITE THE CONSIDERABLY INCREASED COST OF BITUMEN. FOR OPTIMAL USAGE OF THIS CONSTRUCTION METHOD, STANDARD DESIGNS ARE POINTING TOWARDS A REDUCTION IN THE THICKNESS OF THE BITUMINOUS LAYERS, ACCORDING TO THE "GUIDELINES FOR ROAD SURFACES (RSTO 75)". STAGE CONSTRUCTION IS THEREFORE OF SIGNIFICANCE. INTERNATIONALLY THE TREND IS TOWARDS ROAD BASES CONTAINING A BINDER. THESE, AND ESPECIALLY BITUMEN"BOUND ROADBASES, REDUCE THE DEPLETION OF OUR DEPOSITS OF MINERAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS. TO AVOID DEFORMATION EASILY-COMPACTED MIXES ARE USED AND FAIRLY HARD BITUMENS. MIXES HAVING A HIGH PROPORTION OF CRUSHED AGGREGATE AND A MAXIMUM GRAIN SIZE ON THE UPPER LIMIT OF THAT PERMISSIBLE ALSO REQUIRE LESS BITUMEN. FOR INTENSIVE COMPACTION IT IS ADVANTAGEOUS TO LAY THICK LAYERS. GUSSASPHALT CONSTRUCTION AND BITUMINOUS BRIDGE SURFACING HAVE IN RECENT YEARS DEVELOPED TO A HIGH TECHNICAL LEVEL.
