FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION - OPTIMAL USAGE AND PROBLEMS. ROAD CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE 1975. 25 YEARS OF FGS 17TH-19TH SEPTEMBER 1975

ASPHALTSTRASSENBAU - OPTIMALE ANWENDUNG UND PROBLEME STRASSENBAUTAGUNG 1975, 25 JAHRE FGS, 17-19 SEPTEMBER 1975

THE DEMANDS MADE ON ROADS AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND AGGREGATES ARE CONTINUALLY CHANGING, BUT THE REQUIREMENTS OF A CARRIAGEWAY SURFACE FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY REMAIN CONSTANT (E.G. A SURFACE WHICH IS AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE WHILST PROVIDING SUFFICIENT GRIP). NEWLY GAINED KNOWLEDGE SHOULD BE COLLECTED IN NEW AND REVISED CODES OF PRACTICE. THESE MUST TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF ROAD CONSTRUCTIONS AND MAINTENANCE. UNIFICATION IN ASPHALT ROAD CONSTRUCTION APPEARS THEREFORE WORTHWHILE AT LEAST FOR TESTING REQUIREMENTS, IF NOT FOR CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS. THE STATISTICAL DATA SHEETS GIVE ASSISTANCE FOR DECISIONS REGARDING THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION. THE ECONOMICAL USE - VALUE OF A ROAD IS, APART FROM BINDER AND AGGREGATE, MAINLY DEPENDENT ON THE POROSITY OF THE COURSES AND THE UNIFORMITY OF THE SURFACE. SUCH REQUIREMENTS DEMAND THE INCREASING ADOPTION OF MECHANIZED PRODUCTION FOR ASPHALT, THE ADVANTAGES OF WHICH ARE GIVEN IN THE PAPER. LIKEWISE EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN FOR THE ECONOMIES OF STAGE CONSTRUCTION. FURTHER, THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH WAVE FORMATION IN THE VICINITY OF JUNCTIONS AND CRAWLER LANES ARE DISCUSSED AND ALSO THOSE WITH TRANSITIONS ONTO BRIDGES AND SURFACING IN TUNNELS.
