STOCHASTIC RELIABILITY ANALYSIS OF EARTHQUAKE-VIBRATED STRUCTURES

THE ACCELERATION COURSE OF EARTHQUAKES IS REPRESENTED BY A STOCHASTIC MODEL. IT CAN ACCOMMODATE THE GROUND CONDITIONS, SHOWS THE TYPICAL UNSTEADY CHARACTER OF THE VIBRATION AND PROVIDES A GAUSSIAN RANDOM PROCESS. THE MODEL WILL ALSO APPLY TO THE SIMULATION OF EARTHQUAKE PROCESSES ON THE DIGITAL COMPUTER. THE STRUCTURE BEING INVESTIGATED IS ASSUMED TO BE A CONTINUOUS (E.G. DEFLECTING BEAM OR THRUST BEAM) OR A DISCRETE MODEL. A WEAK, VISCOSE, INNER DAMPING IS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION AND THE MODAL ANALYSIS IS APPLIED. DECISIVE FOR THE RELIABILITY, AND THEREFORE FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE CONSTRUCTION, IS THE MAXIMUM VALUE WHICH IS OBTAINED FOR THE STRUCTURE-RESPONSE AS A RESULT OF THE EARTHQUAKE VIBRATION. A REFUSAL MAY OCCUR IF ALLOWABLE LIMITS ARE OVERSTEPPED. THE PROBABILITY OF THIS EXPERIENCE (REFUSAL OR FIRST TRANSMISSION PROBABILITY) MUST THEREFORE BE CALCULATED. SHOULD AN EXACT SOLUTION OF THE UNSTEADY FIRST TRANSMISSION PROBLEM BE UNKNOWN, APPROXIMATE SOLUTIONS IN THE FORM OF ESTIMATIONS ARE SOUGHT. BY THIS MEANS UPPER AND LOWER LIMITS OF THE PROBABILITY MAY BE ESTABLISHED. IMPROVEMENTS ARE DEMONSTRATED BY MEANS OF VARIOUS NUMERICAL EXAMPLES AND THE RESULTS COMPARED WITH THOSE FROM THE SIMULATED RESULTS. IT SHOWS THAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER LIMITS OF THE REFUSAL PROBABILITY CAN BE FUNDAMENTALLY REDUCED. THEREBY A LESS CONSERVATIVE CONSTRUCTION FOR EARTHQUAKE-AFFECTED STRUCTURES MAY BE POSSIBLE.
