THE QUESTION OF TENSILE CONCRETE STRESSES IN CONTINUOUS COMPOSITE BRIDGES

IT IS PROPOSED TO ELIMINATE TENSILE CONCRETE STRESSES IN CONTINUOUS COMPOSITE BRIDGES ARISING FROM IMPOSED LOADINGS BY MEANS OF PARTIAL ELASTIC SUPPORTS. PERMANENT PRESTRESSING CAN ALSO BE COMBINED WITH THE PROPOSED ELASTIC SUPPORT SYSTEM. AS WELL AS THE ADVANTAGES OF MAINTAINING CONTINUOUS SHEAR COUPLING WHILE NOT EXCEEDING THE TENSILE STRESSES IN THE CONCRETE WITHOUT EXPENSIVE CONSTRUCTIONAL MEASURES THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH SUCH ELASTIC SUPPORTS MUST BE MENTIONED. ANY SUCH ELASTIC SUPPORT MUST BE MADE TO HAVE RELIABLE MECHANICAL FUNCTION. IN ADDITION THERE ARE LIMITS TO ITS UNIVERSAL APPLICABILITY. SO FOR INSTANCE SUCH ELASTIC SUPPORT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR SPANWISE DISSIPATION OF TORSIONAL MOMENTS ARISING FROM UNSYMMETRICAL LOADING OF BOX GIRDERS. THIS DEFECT CAN BE RECTIFIED BY USE OF POINT BEARINGS.
