THE RESULTS AND STATEMENTS ARE BASED ON DATA FROM 16000 TESTS IN THE LABORATORY, IN THE FIELD AND ON CONSTRUCTION SITES. INFORMATION IS GIVEN CONCERNING THE PROBLEM OF REDUCED GRAIN SIZE CAUSED BY SITE TRAFFIC AND COMPACTION, AND ON THE DEGREE OF NON-UNIFORMITY IN GRADING AND COARSENESS FACTOR IN RELATION TO CRUSHING STRENGTH AND COMPACTABILITY. FURTHER RESULTS DEAL WITH STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF COMPACTION AND DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR AND THE RELATION BETWEEN THE VARIOUS MEASURED PARAMETERS (DENSITY, PROCTOR, PLATE LOADING, BENKELMAN BEAM). ESTIMATION OF THE FROST RESISTANCE AND THE STRENGTH DURING THAWING IS ALSO SHOWN, IN THIS CONNECTION CASAGRANDE'S FROST CRITERION IS CONSIDERED TOO SEVERE FOR AUSTRIAN CONDITIONS AND ADOPTION OF A MINERAL FACTOR CRITERION IS SUGGESTED. THE MAIN FACTORS INVESTIGATED IN CONNECTION WITH BEARING CAPACITY WERE THE INFLUENCES OF COMPACTION AND SHEAR STRENGTH. BECAUSE OF THE GREAT VARIATION IN DEFORMATION AND BEARING CAPACITY PARAMETERS THE (SEMI) EMPIRICAL DESIGN METHODS ARE GIVEN PREFERENCE OVER THE THEORETICAL METHODS. PRACTICAL HINTS ARE GIVEN CONCERNING TESTING (STATISTICAL QUALITY CONTROL) AND THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE REQUIRED QUALITY STANDARDS.
