BENTONIT-SUSPENSIONEN - EIGENSCHAFTEN, HERSTELLUNG UND PRUEFUNG

THE FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BENTONITE AS USED EXTENSIVELY TODAY IN EXCAVATION AND BORING TECHNIQUES - THE CRYSTAL LATTICE STRUCTURE, THE INTERNAL CRYSTALLINE EXPANSION PROPERTY AND THE SPECIAL LOADING RATIO OF THE MONTMORILLONITE CRYSTALS - ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED, IN ORDER TO EXPLAIN THE SPECIFIC QUALITIES OF BENTONITE-SUSPENSION BY REFERENCE TO THESE FEATURES. AN ANALYSIS OF THE SEQUENTIAL REACTION DURING THE PRODUCTION OF BENTONITE-SUSPENSION SHOWS THE PROCESS OF DISPERSAL WHICH IS FUNDAMENTAL TO ITS USE. A DETAILED DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS OF THE DIFFERENT METHODS OF TESTING AND CONTROLLING THE BENTONITE-SUSPENSION WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE REQUIREMENTS AND POSSIBILITIES ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DISPERSAL AND SWELLING TIME ON THE CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALITY OF BENTONITE-SUSPENSION IS SHOWN FROM THE RESULTS OF NUMEROUS EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS. AS A RESULT OF THIS EXPERIMENTAL EXPERIENCE THE FUNDAMENTAL POSSIBILITY OF SAVING BENTONITE IN PRACTICE (20% TO 50%) HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED WHENEVER DISCONTINUOUS FULLY AUTOMATIC MIXING PLANT IS SET UP ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE AS OPPOSED TO THE USE OF GROUND MIXING. THE RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT CONTAINS IN PLACE OF AN AGITATOR A HIGHLY EFFECTIVE DISPERSAL AGGREGATE, WHICH HAS NO ABRASIVE SUSCEPTIBLE ONE-OFF PARTS. BY THE USE OF A PARTICULAR BENTONITE TYPE SUCH A DISPERSAL INSTALLATION WILL REDUCE THE SWELLING TIME BY 1 TO 2 HOURS, WHEREBY THE SUSPENSION QUALITY ACHIEVED WILL BE ONLY A LITTLE LESS THAN THAT ACHIEVED DURING THE MUCH LONGER SWELLING TIME UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS.
