TRAFFIC NOISE ON ASPHALT AND CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAYS

ROLLGERAEUSCHE AUF ASPHALT- UND BETONDECKEN

AS A RESULT OF THE SECTIONAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAYS ON THE SOUTHERN MOTORWAY IN CARINTHIA, THE OPPORTUNITY WAS PROVIDED FOR MEASURING TRAFFIC NOISE ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF SURFACES. IN THESE COMPARATIVE MEASUREMENTS THE A-SCALE NOISE LEVELS OF TWO PASSING VEHICLES, A VW-KOMBI AND AN R 16 CAR, WERE NOTED. THE ADHERENCE OF THE REFERENCE SPEED OF 80 OR 100 KM PER HOUR WAS CONTROLLED BY RADAR APPARATUS. THE MEASURING MICROPHONE WAS SITUATED IN A POSITION 6 M FROM THE CENTRE LINE OF THE VEHICLE AT A HEIGHT OF 1.2 M. THE NOISE LEVELS FOR THE FOLLOWING SURFACES WERE OBSERVED: (1) CONCRETE ROAD, BUILT IN 1970, VERY ROUGH WEARING SURFACE, MAX AGGREGATE SIZE 25 MM; (2) ASPHALT AGGREGATE 0-16 MM, 1973; (3) ASPHALT AGGREGATE 0-12 MM, 1974; (4) GRAVEL BITUMEN, NOT PREVIOUSLY TRAVERSED; (5) CONCRETE, NEW, NOT PREVIOUSLY TRAVERSED. COMPARED TO THE ROUGH CONCRETE, THE FOLLOWING AVERAGE NOISE LEVEL DIFFERENCES WERE OBSERVED: ASPHALT 0/16: -2.5 DB(A), ASPHALT 0/12: -5 DB(A), GRAVEL BITUMEN: -2.5 DB(A), NEW CONCRETE: -1.5 DB(A). IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT IN THE CASE OF THE SURFACES INVESTIGATED, IT WAS NOT THE BINDER MATERIAL WHICH HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE UPON THE NOISE LEVEL BUT THE STRUCTURE OF THE AGGREGATES.
