EXPERIENCE WITH THE PLACING OF FLOWING CONCRETE FOR THE REPAIR OF CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAYS

AS A RESULT OF USING FLOWING CONCRETE IN CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAY REPAIR WORK IT HAS BEEN POSSIBLE TO REDUCE BY AN AVERAGE OF 40% THE NECESSARY ROAD CLOSURE TIME FOR INDIVIDUAL AREAS, I.E. THE PERIOD FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE CLOSURE UNTIL TRAFFIC IS AGAIN ALLOWED TO FLOW. BY APPLYING THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM SETTING EXPERIMENTS THIS SAVING IN TIME MAY BE MORE THAN 50%. THIS CAN BE OBTAINED BECAUSE NOT ONLY CAN THE CONSTRUCTION TIME FOR THE CONCRETE SLAB BE REDUCED BUT ALSO THE SETTING PERIOD CAN BE SHORTENED. BUT NOT ALL POSSIBILITIES HAVE BEEN EXHAUSTED. TRIALS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE USE OF RAPID CEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF FLOWING CONCRETE COULD REDUCE THE SETTING PERIOD FROM TWO DAYS TO THE SAME NUMBER OF HOURS. THE FACT THAT THE USE OF FLOWING CONCRETE EASES PLACING RATHER THAN MANUFACTURE INDICATES THAT NOT ONLY HAS IT ADVANTAGES IN THE REPAIR OF CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAYS BUT ALSO IN THE FUTURE IN THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE PREVIOUSLY THE CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE DECKS HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT BY THE USE OF SMALL EQUIPMENT.
