TEST SECTION WIEN-ST MARX: REPLACEMENT OF THE FROST BLANKET BY AN EPS CONCRETE LAYER BENEATH THE CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAY SLAB

VERSUCHSSTRECKE WIEN-ST. MARX: ERSATZ DER FROSTSCHUTZSCHICHT DURCH EINE EPS-BETONSCHICHT UNTER DER BETONFAHRBAHNDECKE

THE PURPOSE OF THIS EXPERIMENTAL ROAD WAS TO STUDY THE HEAT RETAINING PROPERTIES OF THE 15 CM THICK EPS CONCRETE LAYER OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL YEARS AND AFTER LONG TERM OBSERVATIONS TO CONCLUDE WHETHER THIS LAYER IS AS DURABLE AS OTHERS IN BORDERING SECTIONS MADE UP OF BITUMINOUS OR CEMENT STABILIZED MATERIALS. IN ORDER TO STUDY THE UNIFORMITY OF THE PRODUCT A TOTAL OF 80 TEST SPECIMENS WERE MADE AND THEIR WET CONCRETE DENSITY MEASURED AT THE SPREADING MACHINE USING A CORE EXTRACTOR. THE PROPERTIES OF THE EPS CONCRETE WERE TO A LARGE EXTENT DETERMINED BY ITS DENSITY. AN INCREASE IN WET DENSITY OF ABOUT 10 KG/M3 IMPROVED THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH BY 1.4 KP/CM2 AND THE TENSILE STRENGTH BY 0.3 KG/CM2. THE TEMPERATURE WAS MEASURED CONTINUOUSLY BENEATH THE EPS CONCRETE AND REMAINED STEADILY POSITIVE. AS THE WINTERS SINCE CONSTRUCTION WAS COMPLETED HAVE BEEN MILD, THE EXPECTED TEMPERATURES BENEATH THE EPS LAYER WERE CALCULATED FROM AIR TEMPERATURES ALONG THE TEST STRETCH. MEASURED TEMPERATURES AGREED WELL WITH THOSE CALCULATED. THIS IS A PROOF OF SAFETY AGAINST FROST ATTACK ON THE ROAD BASE. THE HEAT RETAINING PROPERTIES OF THE EPS CONCRETE SUFFERED NO DAMAGE OVER A YEAR FROM EXCESSIVE WATER INTAKE.
