INVESTIGATIONS INTO PERMISSIBLE TRANSITION GRADIENTS AND TORSION OF CARRIAGEWAYS

UNTERSUCHUNGEN ZULAESSIGER ANRAMPUNGSMASSE UND FAHRBAHNTORSIONEN

IN EXISTING GUIDELINES VALUES ARE GIVEN FOR MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM TRANSITION GRADIENTS ON HIGHWAY EDGE CHANNELS. THE MAXIMUM VALUES, DEPENDING ON THE DESIGN SPEED, ARE BETWEEN 0.65 AND 1.50%. IT WOULD APPEAR DESIRABLE TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER THESE VALUES ARE IN FACT SUITABLE CONSIDERING VEHICULAR BEHAVIOUR WITHIN THE LIMITS OF PERMISSIBLE DRIVING SPEEDS, SINCE A STEEPER TRANSITION HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF BETTER SURFACE WATER DRAINAGE FROM THE CARRIAGEWAY AND A REDUCTION OF THE CRITICAL LENGTH OF TRANSITION CURVE. THE BASIS OF THIS WORK IS TO ANALYZE THE COURSE OF A VEHICLE MATHEMATICALLY AND MECHANICALLY ON A CURVE MADE UP OF A "CIRCULAR CURVE - TRANSITION CURVE - CIRCULAR CURVE" COMBINATION. IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM THEORETICALLY A MECHANICAL SUBSTITUTE MODEL WAS NECESSARY WHICH COULD TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE CONTROLLING MOVEMENTS AND MOVEMENT PATTERNS. THE MOVEMENT OF THE VEHICLE WAS REPRESENTED MATHEMATICALLY BY A COMPLEX OF NON-LINEAR EQUATIONS. TWO VEHICLES WERE INVESTIGATED NUMERICALLY USING DIFFERENT CENTRE OF GRAVITY POSITIONS AND APPROACH SPEEDS OF 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 AND 140 KM/H. THE RESULTS WERE TABULATED AND ARE REPRESENTED DIAGRAMMATICALLY. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE TRANSITION GRADIENT COULD BE HIGHER THAN PREVIOUSLY PRESCRIBED. FOR EXAMPLE THE ROAD EDGE GRADIENT FOR A DESIGN SPEED OF 100 KM/H COULD BE 1%, COMPARED WITH AN EXISTING VALUE OF 0.50%.
