POSSIBLE WAYS OF REGULATING MOISTURE IN CONCRETE PRODUCTION PLANT

ONE OF THE PREREQUISITES FOR OBTAINING SATISFACTORY CONCRETE STRENGTH IS THAT THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF WATER IS ADDED AND UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED, BEARING IN MIND THE MOISTURE CONTENT OF THE AGGREGATES. SINCE THE WATER CONTAINED IN THE AGGREGATES USUALLY VARIES ESPECIALLY WITH GRAIN SIZE, IT IS NECESSARY WHEN MAKING CONCRETE TO KNOW THE MOISTURE CONTENT CONTINUOUSLY SO THAT THE CORRECT QUANTITY OF ADDITIONAL WATER MAY BE ADDED. METHODS OF MEASURING MOISTURE CONTENT ARE DISCUSSED WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO INDIRECT METHODS, IE THE DETERMINATION OF THOSE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIAL WHICH ALTER UNDER THE EFFECTS OF MOISTURE, IN PARTICULAR ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY, THE DIELECTRIC CONSTANTS AND THE DECELERATING EFFECTS OF WATER ON NEUTRONS AS A CONSEQUENCE OF HIGH HYDROGEN CONTENT. FINALLY THE AUTOMATION OF A CONCRETE PLANT IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL WITH REFERENCE TO A PLANT EQUIPPED WITH THE LATEST MACHINERY. TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC SUCCESS WAS ACHIEVED USING NEUTRON PROBES IN CONNECTION WITH A PROCESS-CALCULATOR.
