THE FIGHT AGAINST NOISE IN TRACTORS AND TRUCKS

THE CHIEF CRITERIA GOVERNING THE CONSTRUCTION OF GOODS VEHICLES IN RECENT DECADES HAVE BEEN ENGINE PERFORMANCE, COMFORT AND ECONOMY. THIS DEVELOPMENT HAS LED TO MORE POWERFUL AND FASTER RUNNING ENGINES AND LIGHTER CONSTRUCTION. THIS HOWEVER INCREASED THE NOISE EMISSION TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT IT NOW FORMS THE MAIN CAUSE OF NUISANCE TO THE HUMAN OCCUPANTS. THE PRESENT PAPER DEALS IN THE FIRST INSTANCE WITH NOISE EMISSION AND POSSIBILITIES FOR ITS REDUCTION ARISING FROM LEGAL PROVISIONS WITH REFERENCE TO INSIDE AND OUTSIDE NOISE AND THEN DEALS WITH INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED IN THE LABORATORY ON A TRACTOR OF A PARTICULAR TYPE. ON THE BASIS OF ANALYSES TO ESTABLISH THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL SOURCES OF NOISE THE POSSIBILITIES FOR ACTIVE AND PASSIVE NOISE SUPPRESSION ARE PRESENTED. THE LEVELS OF SUPPRESSION EXPECTED BY THE PUBLIC CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY MEANS OF INSULATION AND ABSORPTION. TO OBTAIN IMPROVED NOISE REDUCTION IN BUILT-UP AREAS IT WAS NECESSARY TO RESORT TO COMPLETE ENCAPSULATION OF THE ENGINE.
