EARTH PRESSURES ON CYLINDRICAL STRUCTURAL BODIES IN COMPARISON TO MEASUREMENTS ON A MODEL

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EARTH PRESSURES MEASURED ON A MODEL OF A BURIED CYLINDRICAL STRUCTURAL UNIT MAY NOT BE SATISFACTORILY OBTAINED FROM THE WELL-KNOWN CALCULATION FOR THE RADIAL SYMMETRICAL EARTH PRESSURE CASE. A TECHNIQUE BASED ON ANOTHER FAILURE PRINCIPLE, WHICH SATISFIES THE EQUILIBRIUM CONDITIONS OF A HORIZONTAL LAMELLA OF THE SLIDING BODY CONSIDERING BOTH THE TANGENTIAL AND THE VERTICAL ARCHING, DISPLAYS THE TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MEASURED EARTH PRESSURE DIAGRAMS. FROM A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TEST RESULTS AND THE CALCULATION, VALUES MAY BE OBTAINED REGARDING THE MAGNITUDES AND THE PATTERN OF THE LATERAL PRESSURE PARAMETERS OF THE RING OR VERTICAL ARCHING WITHIN THE SLIDING BODY.
