ELASTIC HEAVE OF THE BOTTOM OF DEEP EXCAVATIONS

ELASTISCHE HEBUNG DER SOHLE VON TIEFEN BAUGRUBEN

A PIT MEASURING 29 M BY 62 M AND 9 M DEEP WAS EXCAVATED IN A PRE-LOADED TORTONIC CLAY. AFTER COMPLETION OF THE EXCAVATION THE BOTTOM ROSE BY 34 MM. ON THE BASIS OF THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY THE UNLOADING MODULUS WAS DETERMINED FROM THE AMOUNT OF HEAVE AND COMPARED TO THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY AS DETERMINED IN THE LABORATORY WITH THE OEDOMETER. SATISFACTORY AGREEMENT WAS OBTAINED ON THE BASIS OF ASSUMING THAT ON UNLOADING THE INFLUENCE OF THE HEAVE DOES NOT EXTEND MORE THAN 5 M BELOW THE BOTTOM OF THE EXCAVATION.
