LOADING TEST ON AN INSTRUMENTED BORED PILE

THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES A LOADING TEST ON A BORED PILE CARRIED OUT IN THE COURSE OF CONSTRUCTING THE FOUNDATIONS OF ABUTMENTS FOR A MOTORWAY BRIDGE. A PILE, 35 M LONG AND 90 CM IN DIAMETER WAS BORED IN SOFT TO STIFF CLAYEY SILT. AT FOUR CROSS SECTIONS, FOUR STRAIN GAUGES WERE FITTED TO THE REINFORCEMENT. FOR A PERIOD OF 100 DAYS BEFORE THE LOADING TEST SHRINKAGE OF THE CONCRETE WAS MEASURED. IN ADDITION THE DEFORMATIONS OF THE CROSS SECTION INDICATED THE NEGATIVE SKIN FRICTION, WHICH RESULTED FROM BACKFILLING. FOR THE LOADING TESTS THE SETTLEMENT OF THE PILE HEAD AND THE INSTRUMENTED CROSS SECTIONS WERE ILLUSTRATED IN RELATION TO THE LOADING AS WELL AS THE STRESSES IN RELATION TO THE DEPTH. FRICTION AND COMPRESSION MODULI WERE CALCULATED AND COMPARED WITH THE TEST RESULTS. THE COVERING ABSTRACT FOR THE CONFERENCE IS IRRD NO 306088.
