STATIC BEARING CAPACITY OF FRICTION PILES

THIS PAPER DEALS WITH THE LONG TERM STATIC BEARING CAPACITY OF FRICTION PILES WHERE CALCULATIONS ARE BASED ON EFFECTIVE STRESSES. MATHEMATICAL FORMULAE ARE PROVIDED FOR THE SURFACE FRICTION OF A PILE UNDER THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS: (1) WHEN THE PILE IS DRIVEN INTO THE SOIL; (2) WHEN THE PILE IS EXTRACTED FROM THE SOIL; (3) IN THE CASE OF NEGATIVE FRICTION. THE PARAMETERS INVOLVED ARE THOSE FOR SHEARING MOBILIZATION AND ROUGHNESS COEFFICIENTS. MEASUREMENT DIAGRAMS ARE ESTABLISHED. MATHEMATICAL FORMULAE FOR POINT RESISTANCE CONTAIN THE LEVEL OF SHEARING MOBILIZATION AND A PARAMETER RELATED TO THE SIZE OF THE SHEARING ZONE. A MEASUREMENT DIAGRAM IS ALSO ESTABLISHED WHICH INDICATES BOTH SHEARING MOBILIZATION AND THE SIZE OF THE SHEARING ZONE. AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THOSE MATHEMATICAL MODELS AND DIAGRAMS ESTABLISHED, CALCULATIONS ARE MADE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF (1) PILES IN OVER CONSOLIDATED CLAY; (2) A LARGE PILE FOR MARINE CONSTRUCTION IN STRATIFIED SOIL.
