THE CRITICAL PENETRATION RATE OF PILES IN COHESIONLESS SOIL

THIS PAPER EXAMINES THE QUASI-STATIC MOVEMENT OF THE HALF SPACE DURING THE DRIVING OF A CYLINDRICAL PILE, THE HALF SPACE BEING FILLED WITH RIGID IMPERVIOUS GRANULES. AN ASSESSMENT IS MADE OF THE SUDDEN INTRODUCTION OF A LOAD INCREASE ON THE SETTLEMENT OF A NARROW INERTIA LOADED PILE SUPPORTED BY A QUASI-STATICALLY REACTING HALF SPACE. A MERE DESCRIPTION OF THOSE DYNAMIC EFFECTS OBSERVED IN TESTS IS NOT SUFFICIENT. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE INFLUENCE OF THE INERTIA OF GRANULAR MATERIAL ON DRIVING RESISTANCE AND FORMULATES A CRITERION FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSITION TO DYNAMIC CONDITIONS. THE REDUCTION OF ACTUAL STRESSES BECAUSE OF ENTRAINED AIR OVER-PRESSURE IS ALSO CONSIDERED AS AN ALTERNATIVE CAUSE OF DYNAMIC EFFECTS. TEST RESULTS CONFIRM THE DERIVATION OF QUASI-STATIC REACTION AND SUPPORT THE NOTION OF REDUCING DRIVING RESISTANCE BY CHANGES IN THE MOVEMENT PATTERN OF SAND.
