SETTLEMENTS AND THE PERMISSIBLE BEARING LOAD ON PILES IN SAND

TASSEMENTS ET FORCE PORTANTE LIMITE DES PIEUX EN MILIEU PULVERULENT

THE AUTHORS PROVIDE AN EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF PILES IN SAND AT FAILURE AND UNDER WORKING LOAD WHEN IN USE. THE EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT IN THE LABORATORY USING A LARGE CONTAINER AND A METAL PILE EQUIPPED WITH STRAIN GAUGES. THE INTERPRETATION OF FAILURE, PARTICULARLY THE LIMITING VALUES OF THE POINT RESISTANCE AND THE UNIT SKIN FRICTION AT GREAT DEPTHS, TOOK INTO CONSIDERATION THE PHENOMENA ASSOCIATED WITH CRITICAL PRESSURE. FINALLY, CALCULATIONS BASED ON THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD (DEALING WITH SMALL DEFORMATIONS IN THE ELASTIC AREA WHILE TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE RELATIVE SLIDING MOVEMENT BETWEEN PILE AND SOIL) INDICATE THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS LOCAL COMBINATION IN RELATION TO LOAD TRANSFERENCE IN SANDY CONDITIONS. COMPARISONS WITH EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS EMPHASIZE THE INFLUENCE OF THE TYPE OF PRODUCTION OF THE PILE AND MAKE FAIRLY ACCURATE RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING THE EVALUATION OF SETTLEMENTS.
