TIME DEPENDENT BEHAVIOUR OF SLOPES AND CUTTINGS IN SOFT AND STIFF CLAY

THE AUTHOR DEMONSTRATES THE USE OF A VISCOUS MATERIAL LAW DEVELOPED AT HIS INSTITUTE, USING AS AN EXAMPLE THE TREATMENT OF THE SOIL SURFACE UNDULATION SUBJECTED TO CREEP MOVEMENT. THIS INVOLVES THE CARRYING OUT OF EFFECTIVE AND ECONOMICAL RESTORATION MEASURES. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO OBTAIN AN APPROXIMATION OF THE TIME FOR WHICH SLOPES WOULD STAND FROM THE LOGARITHMIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRESS AND DEFORMATION SPEED AND ON THE BASIS OF A KNOWN PRESCRIBED FAILURE DEFORMATION. THE GOVERNING SOIL CONSTANTS CAN BE DERIVED WITH THE USUAL TRIAXIAL APPARATUS IN THE ROUTINE TEST. THE SIMPLIFYING FACTOR IS THE FACT THAT THE FORMULATION OF THE USUAL STABILITY CALCULATION IS APPLICABLE WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST MODIFICATION.
