STABILITY ANALYSIS OF MULTI-LAYERED EXCAVATION SLOPE

THE RESULTS OF A STABILITY ANALYSIS OF A HIGH CUTTING SLOPE BY MEANS OF THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD ARE DESCRIBED. THE UPPER SECTION OF THE SLOPE LIES IN A BRITTLE SOIL (LOESS), WHILE THE LOWER SECTION LEADS THROUGH PLASTIC STRATA. SUCH A SOIL STRATA SERIES IS TYPICAL FOR LARGE REGIONS OF THE NORTHERN BULGARIAN DANUBE PLAIN. THE SLOPE WAS CONSIDERED AS A LINEAR ELASTIC ISOTROPIC MEDIUM WITH VARIOUS COEFFICIENTS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL STRATA. THE FAILURE CRITERION DERIVED FROM THE COMPUTER PROGRAM MADE IT POSSIBLE TO FOLLOW THE APPEARANCE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF PLASTIC ZONES WITH INCREASES IN THE INCLINATION OF THE SLOPE AND TO CONFIRM THE INFLUENCE OF THE RELATIVE DEFORMABILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL STRATA. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FAILURE ZONES APPEARED FIRST IN THE STIFFENED LAYERS AND THAT AS THE LOESS SHOWS ITSELF TO BE A MATERIAL WHICH WEAKENS WITH AN INCREASE IN THE DEFORMATION, IN SUCH SLOPES THE OCCURRENCE OF PROGRESSIVE FAILURE MUST BE EXPECTED.
