EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS OF SLOPE DEFORMATIONS

THE RESULTS OF THE MODEL TESTS INTO THE SLOPE DEFORMATIONS OF EARTHWORKS OBTAINED FROM CENTRIFUGE MODEL APPARATUS ARE PRESENTED. THE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON MODELS OF NON-COHESIVE SOILS AND COHESIVE SOILS. THE MODEL TESTS ON THE NON-COHESIVE SOILS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE SLOPE IN PRACTICE SLIPS TOWARDS THE PLANE SURFACES. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE HEIGHT OF THE EXTREMELY STABLE SLOPE AND THE PRIMARY SOIL DENSITY WAS ESTABLISHED. ON THE BASIS OF MODEL TESTS ON COHESIVE SOILS THE NATURE OF THE DEFORMATIONS OCCURRING IN THE MODEL WERE STUDIED, THE LINEAR LAYOUT OF VARIOUS HORIZONTAL DISPLACEMENTS AND SETTLEMENTS FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL CASE WAS ESTABLISHED, THE DIAGRAMS OF THE SLOPE - LANDSLIPS OBTAINED. THE RESULTS OF COMPARATIVE TESTS ON MODEL SLOPES OF AN EMBANKMENT DAM AND ON A NATURAL SLOPE ARE INCLUDED IN THE PAPER. AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE IN THE SLOPE DEFORMATION OF THESE STRUCTURES WAS DISCLOSED AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE NECESSARY CONSIDERATION OF THE STRESS CONDITION OF STRUCTURES IN THE ESTIMATION OF THE STABILITY OF SLOPES WAS DERIVED.
