THE TIME EFFECT OF SUSPENSION ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF PIERS

COMPARATIVE LOAD TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON TWO PIERS OF RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTION 0.4 X 2.2 M CONSTRUCTED IN DANUBE GRAVEL-SAND TO A DEPTH OF 6 M BY MEANS OF THE SLURRY TRENCH TECHNIQUE. IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF EACH PIER THE SAME METHOD AND MATERIALS WERE USED WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE TIME OF EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SUSPENSION. THE AVERAGE TIME OF EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SUSPENSION ON THE FOUNDATION SOIL WAS EIGHT HOURS IN THE CASE OF PIER P1 AND NINETY SEVEN HOURS (4 DAYS) IN THE CASE OF PIER P2. EQUIPPING OF THE PIERS WITH STRAIN GAUGES FOR MEASURING LATERAL MOVEMENTS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO CONFIRM THE VITAL INFLUENCE OF THE TIME OF EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SUSPENSION BOTH ON THE SKIN FRICTION AND ALSO ON THE END REACTION.
