THE EFFECT OF STUDDED TIRES ON DIFFERENT PAVEMENT AND SURFACE TEXTURES

TESTS PERFORMED AT THE PAVEMENT TESTING FACILITY OF WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY (WSU) ARE REPORTED. THE TEST, WHICH WERE CONDUCTED FROM FEDRUARY TO MAY 1972, WERE CONDUCTED ON THREE CONCENTRIC TRACKS ON WHICH 16 TIRES TRAVELLED IN 8 WHEEL PATHS OVER 46 SECTIONS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF PAVEMENT MATERIALS, SURFACE OVERLAYS, AND SURFACE TEXTURES. STUDDED AND UNSTUDDED AUTO AND TRUCK TIRES WERE EMPLOYED. THE PRELIMINARY FINDINGS ARE BASED ON WEAR MEASURED FROM MAXIMUM RUT DEPTH BY THE WSU PROFILOMETER AND ARE VALID ONLY UNDER WSU TESTING CONDITIONS. WHILE ALL STUDDED TIRES CAUSED ABNORMAL WEAR ON ALL SURFACES OF THE TEST TRACK, PCC PAVEMENTS SHOWED GREATER RESISTANCE THAN DID THE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SECTIONS. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE SKID RESISTANCE OF THE PCC WAS SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN THAT OF THE AC AFTER WEAR OCCURRED. STEEL FIBROUS CONCRETE OVERLAYS PROVED THE MOST RESISTANT TO STUDS AND TO BE THE EQUAL OF A 0.25- INCH POLYMER CONCRETE OVERLAY AND REGULAR PCC; ALL STEEL FI- BROUS SECTIONS SHOWED SUPERIOR SKID RESISTANCE VALUES AS WEAR PROGRESSED. THE IMPROVEMENT OCCASIONED BY GILSONITE WAS SO SMALL AS TO BE WITHIN THE MEASURING ERROR; THE TREATMENT INITIALLY REDUCED SKID RESISTANCE, BUT THIS EQUALIZED AFTER A FEW WHEEL PASSES. THE SURFACE MATERIALS SHOWING THE GREAT- EST RESISTANCE TO STUDDED TIRE WEAR WERE THE VARIOUS POLYMER OVERLAYS: POLYMER CEMENT AND POLYMER FLY ASK CONCRETES; HOW- EVER, THEIR SKID RESISTANCE DECREASED DRASTICALLY WITH WEAR. DIFFERENT SURFACE TEXTURES, FORMED WHILE THE PCC WAS PLASTIC DISPLAYED NO GREAT ADVANTAGE FOR WEAR RESISTANCE, PROBABLY BECAUSE THE TEXTURES CONSISTED OF SAND--CEMENT MORTAR DEFICIENT IN COARSER AGGREGATE. THE NEXT PHASE OF THE PROJECT INVOLVES APPLICATION OF OVERLAYS AND ADDITIONAL WEAR TESTING.
