REDUCTION IN FUEL CONSUMPTION AND NITROUS OXIDE EMISSION BY MEANS OF A LOADING-RELATED ADJUSTMENT OF THE BEGINNING OF SUPPLY

VERMINDERUNG DES KRAFTSTOFFVERBRAUCHS UND DER STICKOXIDEMISSION DURCH BELASTUNGSABHAENGIGES VERSTELLEN DES FOERDERBEGINNS

MEASUREMENTS ON A DIESEL ENGINE WITH FIVE SPECIAL INJECTION PUMPS, FITTED WITH VARIOUS PISTONS, HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT THERE ARE BASICALLY TWO ALTERNATIVES: BY MEANS OF SMALL CONSTRUCTIONAL ALTERATIONS TO THE PISTON THE NITROUS OXIDE EMITTED FROM PRODUCTION ENGINES CAN BE MAINTAINED SO THAT AN IMPROVEMENT OF THE MEAN FUEL CONSUMPTION OF MORE THAN 1% CAN BE ACHIEVED. THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE WHICH INVOLVES A REDUCTION IN THE NITROUS OXIDE EMISSION IN THE INTERESTS OF CLEAN AIR WHILST FOREGOING ECONOMIC ADVANTAGES IN FUEL CONSUMPTION, IS REGARDED AS UNFAVOURABLE IN THE CONTEXT OF CONDITIONS PREVAILING IN THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC.
