CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE EFFICIENCY EVALUATION OF PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEMS

A TOTAL EVALUATION INDEX IS PROPOSED, WHICH IS DISTINGUISHED BY THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES AND POSSIBILITIES: AUTOMATIC INDICATION OF THE LIMIT LOADINGS: THE APPLICATION OF MANY ARBITRARY CRITERIA; VARYING EVALUATION OF INDIVIDUAL CRITERIA; APPLICATION TO ANY SELECTED PROTECTION SYSTEM. THE EFFICIENCY OF PASSENGER PROTECTION IN A COLLISION IS DEPENDENT ON SEVERAL INDIVIDUAL CRITERIA: A RESTRAINT SYSTEM CAN ONLY BE REGARDED AS GOOD, IF ALL INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION VALUES ARE WELL WITHIN THE UPPER ALLOWABLE LIMIT. IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A USEFUL EFFICIENCY EVALUATION OF PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEMS, AN EVALUATION INDEX CAN BE DEFINED, WHICH WILL ITSELF INCREASE WITH AN INCREASE IN THE INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION VALUES AND CLEARLY INDICATES WHEN THE UPPER LIMITS OF THE INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION COEFFICIENT IS REACHED. AN EVALUATION INDEX IS DEFINED, WHICH INCREASES WITH THE INCREASE IN THE INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION COEFFICIENTS. THE MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION OF THE EVALUATION INDEX BI IS DESCRIBED. THE BASIC ASSUMPTION, THAT THE EVALUATION INDEX INCREASES PROGRESSIVELY WITH THE INCREASING INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION VALUES, IS SUPPORTED WITH A DESCRIPTION OF TWO CONCEPTUAL MODELS (TAKING BOTH ENERGY AND THE PRESENCE OF INJURIES INTO CONSIDERATION). FINALLY, THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS SYSTEM PARAMETERS ON THE EVALUATION INDEX IS DEMONSTRATED BY EXAMPLES.
