THE LIMITS AND ERRORS IN VISION UNDER ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING SEEN AS A CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS

KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROPERTIES AND METHODS OF FUNCTIONING OF THE EYE MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE FUNDAMENTAL LIGHTING CONDITIONS OF WHICH WOULD GIVE MAXIMUM SUPPORT TO THE EYE AND IMPROVE THE SAFETY BOTH ON THE ROADS AND AT WORK. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE BASIC VISUAL FUNCTIONS OF THE SEEING PROCESS (LIGHT DIFFERENTIATION SENSITIVITY, ABILITY TO DETERMINE SHAPES, ABILITY TO IDENTIFY COLOURS) AND THEIR TIME DEPENDENCE, WITH THE INCLUSION OF GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATIONS AND RESULTS OF OTHER STUDIES. THE RESULTS MAKE IT CLEAR THAT SAFETY AND VISION ARE CLOSELY RELATED. THUS, WITH INCREASING LUMINANCE THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS FALLS, THIS BEING CREDITED TO IMPROVED VISIBILITY. COLOUR ANOMOLIES ARE FREQUENTLY THE CAUSES OF ACCIDENTS, AS PEOPLE AFFLICTED IN THIS FASHION HAVE, TO A GREATER OR LESSER DEGREE, A PRONOUNCED DIFFICULTY IN IDENTIFYING RED FROM GREEN. EYE TESTS ARE PROPOSED AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE.
