TORSIONAL BEHAVIOUR OF THE HUMAN FEMUR

THE RESULTS OF 36 DYNAMIC TORSION TESTS ON DIAPHYSIAN SEGMENTS OF HUMAN FEMURS RESULTED IN A MEAN STRENGTH OF 118.3 NM FOR WOMEN AND 154.7 NM FOR MEN. ALL SPECIMENS FAILED WITH A SPIRAL SHAPED RUPTURE ON THE SURFACE. WHEN COMPARED WITH THE MEASURED STIFFNESSES AND THE PUBLISHED VALUES FROM SHEAR LOADINGS, THE RESULTS OF THE COMPREHENSIVE FORCE DETERMINATION EXERCISE CARRIED OUT ON THE FEMUR MUST BE CONSIDERED AS FAVOURABLE.
