INFLUENCE OF WEATHER AND ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS - RESULTS OF EVALUATIONS

WITTERUNGSEINFLUESSE UND STRASSENVERKEHRSUNFAELLE - AUSWERTUNGSERGEBNISSE UND KONSEQUENZEN

METEOROLOGISTS HAVE CONCERNED THEMSELVES WITH THE RELATIONS BETWEEN WEATHER AND ROAD, VEHICLE DRIVERS AND TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. THE RESULT OF THESE INVESTIGATIONS SHOWS THAT A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE IN ACCIDENTS IS ALWAYS TO BE EXPECTED WHEN CRITICAL WEATHER CONDITIONS COINCIDE WITH PEAK PERIODS IN TRAFFIC FLOW. THE LATEST INVESTIGATIONS SHOW HOWEVER THAT ON DAYS WITH A CRITICAL WEATHER CONDITION THERE ARE DISTINCT ACCIDENT PEAKS EVEN OUTSIDE PERIODS OF PEAK TRAFFIC FLOW, WHICH CAN BE REDUCED BY RELEVANT SURVEILLANCE. A COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT OF PRESENT LITERATURE ON WEATHER SENSITIVITY AT THE WHEEL SHOWS THAT THE POSSIBLE PROTECTION MEASURES AGAINST BIOTROPIC INFLUENCES OF WEATHER ARE STILL IN A STATE OF DEVELOPMENT, AND THAT FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL REASONS IT IS NOT ADVISABLE TO INCLUDE REFERENCES TO WEATHER BIOTROPY IN WEATHER REPORTS.
