THE AIR-BAG AT THE DECISION TAKING STAGE

DER AIR-BAG IN DER ENTSCHEIDUNGS-PHASE

IN AUGUST 1976 THE TRAFFIC SECRETARY OF THE USA ARRANGED A HEARING WHERE A DISCUSSION TOOK PLACE BETWEEN THOSE WHO WERE FOR THE AIR-BAG AND THOSE WHO WERE AGAINST IT. BY THE END OF 1976 THE SECRETARY WILL DECIDE WHAT TO DO NEXT. THE CAR MANUFACTURERS AND THE SEAT BELT MANUFACTURERS ARE AGAINST THE AIR-BAG, WHILST THE CONSUMER LAWYER NADER AS WELL AS THE INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE IN FAVOUR. IN THE USA 10000 CARS HAVE BEEN FITTED WITH AIR-BAGS WHICH HAVE PROVED POSITIVE IN 96 CASES. THE COST OF INSTALLATION OF A MASS PRODUCED ITEM IS ESTIMATED AT 190 DOLLARS. SAFETY BELTS ARE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE THE SAME RESULT AS REGARDS SAFETY, BUT OBLIGATORY WEARING OF SAFETY BELTS IS DIFFICULT TO ENFORCE IN AMERICA, AS EACH OF THE 52 STATES WOULD HAVE TO PASS A RELEVANT LAW.
