A REPORT ON THE OPTIMISATION OF WHEEL POSITIONING IN MOTOR CARS TO REDUCE TYRE WEAR

THE POSITIONING OF WHEELS MUST BE SO OPTIMISED THAT THE LEAST POSSIBLE TYRE WEAR RESULTS. AS A RESULT OF BAD POSITIONING (TRACK AND CAMBER) THERE APPEARS ONE SIDED ABRASION WHICH CONSIDERABLY REDUCES THE TYRE USE PERIOD. AN INVESTIGATION WAS CARRIED OUT ON A TRABANT 601 CAR TO CONSIDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE FRONT AXLE TRACK UPON TYRE WEAR UNDER CONSTANT CAMBER CONDITIONS. CROSS"PLY AND RADIAL TYRES SHOWED DIVERGING WEAR CONDITIONS FROM EACH OTHER. THE DEPTH OF PROFILE DECREASED AS A FUNCTION OF THE JOURNEY LENGTH IN THE CASE OF CROSS-PLY AND RADIAL TYRES IN A FUNDAMENTALLY DIGRESSIVE FASHION AND NOT IN A LINEAR FORM. WITH RADIAL TYRES THERE WAS LESS WEAR THAN WITH CROSS-PLY. FROM THE RESULTS IT IS POSSIBLE TO DERIVE OPTIMAL FRONT TRACK VALUES, THEY OCCUR FOR CROSS-PLY BETWEEN 6 AND 9 MM, FOR RADIAL TYRES THE MOST FAVOURABLE IS 0 PLUS OR MINUS 1. WITH INCREASING TRAVEL THE APPEARANCE OF FATIGUE IN THE LEAF SPRINGS LINKED TO THE GUIDANCE OF THE WHEELS LEAD TO A REDUCTION OF THE FRONT AXLE TRACK. THE REAR WHEELS OF THE VEHICLE FITTED WITH CROSS-PLY TYRES EXHIBIT A GREATER EXTERNAL EDGE ABRASION THAN THAT OF THE VEHICLE WHOSE WHEELS ARE FITTED WITH RADIAL TYRES. TOGETHER WITH THE INVESTIGATION INTO TYRE WEAR THE WHEEL POSITIONING AND STEERING GEOMETRY OF 25 NEW TRABANT 601 VEHICLES WERE MEASURED AND STATISTICALLY EVALUATED. FROM THE RESULTS DESIRED AND LIMIT VALUES FOR THE TECHNICAL DIAGNOSIS WERE DERIVED. THEY WERE SUPPLEMENTED BY A STUDY OF FAULTS AND THEIR EFFECTS.
