NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN CATALYTIC EXHAUST GAS EMISSION CONTROLLERS

SINCE THE MODEL YEAR 1976 THE LARGEST SECTOR OF MOTOR MANUFACTURERS IN THE USA HAVE DECIDED UPON THE CATALYTIC SOLUTION AS THE MOST ECONOMICAL AND EFFECTIVE METHOD OF EXHAUST GAS CLEANSING. THE OXIDATION CATALYSERS ALLOW THE REDUCTION OF THE HYDROCARBON AND CARBON MONOXIDE EMISSION TO THE LIMITS SET DOWN IN THE LEGISLATION FOR MODEL YEARS 1975 AND 1976. THE NITROUS OXIDE CONTENT IS NOT, OR ONLY MARGINALLY, INFLUENCED BY THE OXIDATION CATALYSERS. THE CATALYTIC AFTERBURNING HAS THE ADVANTAGE THAT IT IS THE POLYCYCLIC AROMATICS WHICH ARE PREFERENTIALLY OXIDISED AT THE CATALYSER AND ARE THUS MADE COMPLETELY HARMLESS. THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF OXIDISATION CATALYSERS AIMS AT THE INCREASE IN THEIR CAPACITY FOR TRANSFORMING NOXIOUS GASES, AT IMPROVED METHODS OF ADAPTING CURRENT MOTOR VEHICLE MODELS AND AT A GENERAL REDUCTION IN THE PRICE OF CATALYSERS. MULTIFUNCTIONAL CATALYSERS DISTINGUISH THEMSELVES BY THEIR PROPERTIES, IN SO FAR AS CARBON MONOXIDE, HYDROCARBONS AND NITROUS OXIDES ARE REDUCED TO A LARGE EXTENT. ACCORDING TO THE MOTOR EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS AND THE PLACE OF INSTALLATION OF THE CATALYTIC REACTOR, THERE CAN BE CASES WHERE OVERHEATING OCCURS. TO PROTECT THE CATALYSERS IN THESE CASES WARNING DEVICES WERE DEVELOPED. FURTHER DEVELOPMENT WORK IS BEING CARRIED OUT AT THE MOMENT RELATING TO THE LIFE OF THE CATALYSERS AS EFFECTED BY THE USE OF LEADED AND PARTIALLY LEADED FUELS. THESE EXPERIMENTS REFER TO BOTH PRECIOUS AND NON-PRECIOUS METAL CATALYSERS.
