OBSERVATIONS OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF BUS DRIVERS IN A CITY TRANSPORT OPERATION

THE STARTING POINT OF THE STUDY WAS THE QUESTION AS TO WHETHER DRIVER BEHAVIOUR DATA OBTAINED FROM REPRESENTATIVE RANDOM SAMPLES ARE VALID FOR SPECIFIC GROUPS OF DRIVERS (BUS DRIVERS), AND WHAT DIFFERENCES THERE ARE AT THE LEVEL OF THE INDIVIDUAL OBSERVATION. UNSCIENTIFIC OBSERVATIONS OF DRIVER BEHAVIOUR WERE MADE ON 78 BUS DRIVERS IN AN URBAN TRANSPORT COMPANY. AFTER THE DATA WERE BROKEN DOWN IT WAS SHOWN THAT THERE WERE 10 FACTORS WHICH EXPLAINED 60.7 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL VARIANCE. FIVE FACTORS WERE ABLE TO BE INTERPRETED WITH CERTAINTY. THE MEAN VALUES AND THE VARIANCES FROM THE BUS DRIVER GROUP WERE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF A REPRESENTATIVE RANDOM SAMPLE. THE FOLLOWING FACTORS ARE DISCUSSED AS EXPLANATIONS OF THE DIFFERENCES WHICH OCCUR: UNSCIENTIFIC OBSERVATION OF DRIVER BEHAVIOUR, FACTORS RELATING TO THE VEHICLE AND SPECIFIC OCCUPATIONS, PRESENCE OF PASSENGERS, KEEPING TO THE TIMETABLE, CHANGE OF OBSERVERS.
