MOTIONS INVOLVING SKIDDING ARE COMPOSED OF LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE MOVEMENTS, AS WELL AS ROTATION ABOUT A VERTICAL AXIS. PRINCIPLES FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SIDEWAYS FORCE WHICH ACTS BETWEEN THE TYRE AND THE ROAD SURFACE AS A KIND OF VISCOUS DAMPING FORCE FOR THE TRANSVERSE MOVEMENTS ARE EXPLAINED. DIAGRAMS SHOW THE DEPENDENCE OF THE LATERAL FORCE ON THE ANGLE OF OBLIQUE MOTION, AS WELL AS THE ANGLE BETWEEN THE VELOCITY VECTOR OF THE ROLLING WHEEL ON THE ROAD AND THE PLANE OF THE WHEEL.
