THE REPORT COVERS MODE OF ACTION AS WELL AS PROS AND CONS OF SEVERAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS (BELT WITH TWO-POINT FIXING, THREE-POINT FIXING, AUTOMATIC BELT, ELASTIC BELT, TENSIONER WITH ELASTIC ELEMENT, AIR-BAG). VARIOUS DECELERATION VALUES ARE SHOWN DIAGRAMMATICALLY. THERE IS A GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATION OF THE HEAD ACCELERATION OF A PASSENGER CAUSED BY THE IMPACT OF A VEHICLE AGAINST A SOLID OBSTRUCTION AT 50 KM/H WITH DERIVED HIC (HEAD INJURY CRITERION) VALUE FOR FOUR RESTRAINT SYSTEMS. A TABLE CONTAINS A COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF 6 RESTRAINT SYSTEMS. IN CONCLUSION, THERE IS A COMPARISON OF CHOSEN TECHNICAL CRITERIA WITH PHYSIOLOGICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND ECONOMICAL FACTORS. REGRET IS EXPRESSED THAT COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS HAS NOT BEEN EMPLOYED SO FAR AS AN INSTRUMENT FOR CHOOSING RESTRAINT SYSTEMS. AS REGARDS COMPULSORY WEARING OF SEAT BELTS, THE AUTOMATIC BELT WITH THREE-POINT FIXING WITHOUT LOAD LIMIT AND PRE-TENSION APPEARS TO BE THE BEST COMPROMISE.
