PROMISING SYSTEMS OF MOTIVE POWER WITH LOW EMISSION OF NOXIOUS FUMES FOR CARS

ERFOLGSVERSPRECHENDE ANTRIEBE GERINGER SCHADSTOFFEMISSION FUER PERSONENKRAFTWAGEN

THE REPORT SHOWS HOW FAR, FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE OF 10 - 15 YEARS, ACTUAL SOLUTIONS CAN BE IDENTIFIED WITH RESPECT TO IMPROVEMENTS IN FUEL CONSUMPTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION. IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PETROL ENGINES WITH LOW NOXIOUS EMISSIONS A DISTINCTION HAS TO BE MADE BETWEEN MEASURES RELATING TO THE ENGINE ITSELF, AND THE USE OF THERMAL AND CATALYTIC AFTER-BURNERS. FOLLOWING A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF THESE THREE SYSTEMS, FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PETROL ENGINE ARE CONSIDERED. HERE, REDUCTION AND SINGLE BED CATALYSERS AND STRATIFIED CHARGE ENGINES ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL AND SHOWN GRAPHICALLY. THE USE OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS IS ALSO DISCUSSED, AS WELL AS THE ROTARY ENGINE, THE DIESEL ENGINE, THE GAS TURBINE AND THE ELECTRIC DRIVE. IT IS THE OPINION OF THE AUTHOR THAT THE PETROL ENGINE INCORPORATING EXHAUST EMISSION CONTROL MEASURES, THE DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL OF WHICH HAS NOT YET BEEN FULLY REALISED, WILL REMAIN THE MAIN SOURCE OF MOTIVE POWER FOR CARS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.
