PROMISING FORMS OF MOTIVE POWER FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES, INCLUDING BUSES

ERFOLGSVERSPRECHENDE ANTRIEBE FUER NUTZFAHRZEUGE EINSCHLIESSLICH OMNIBUSSE

AFTER INTRODUCTORY BASIC CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING THE CHOICE OF PETROL OR DIESEL ENGINE, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO POLLUTION AND AFTER A COMPARISON WITH U.S.A. IN RESPECT OF THE NUMBER OF DIFFERING ENGINE TYPES FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES, THERE FOLLOWS A DISCUSSION ON THE STATE OF DEVELOPMENT AND DEVELOPMENT TRENDS IN THE DIESEL ENGINE. SPECIAL REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE REDUCTION OF NOISE AND EXHAUST EMISSIONS. DETAILED CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO DIFFERENT SYSTEMS OF SUPERCHARGING. DIFFERENT SYSTEMS OF PROPULSION, E.G. STRATIFIED CHARGE ENGINES, VEHICULAR GAS TURBINES, STIRLING ENGINES, ELECTRIC DRIVE ETC ARE DISCUSSED. IN A SUMMARY CHART THE TYPES OF MOTIVE POWER WHICH WILL, WITH SOME CERTAINTY, FIND A USE IN COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS ARE COLLECTED TOGETHER AND COMPARED WITH THE DIESEL ENGINE WITH REGARD TO THEIR ECONOMY, EFFECT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, POWER DENSITY AND OPERATIONAL BEHAVIOUR.
