THE AIMS AND METHODS OF THE RESEARCH ARE DESCRIBED: BIOMECHANICS DESCRIBES THE INJURY MECHANISM AND THE ALLOWABLE LOADINGS WHICH THE HUMAN BODY CAN SUSTAIN WITHOUT DAMAGE OR WITH DEFINED DAMAGE (HUMAN TOLERANCES, BIOMECHANICAL BOUNDARIES OR INJURY CRITERIA). IN INDIVIDUAL SECTIONS OF THE WORK THE FOLLOWING ARE TREATED: INJURY CRITERIA AND PASSENGER PROTECTION CRITERIA, THE PROTECTION OF THE HEAD, THE PROTECTION OF THE BREAST AREA, THE PROTECTION OF THE KNEE - THIGH - PELVIS REGION, SIMULATION OF CAR PASSENGERS, MATHEMATICAL PASSENGER MODELS, PHYSICAL PASSENGER MODELS (DUMMIES), THE DUMMY DEVELOPMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD (FMVSS-DUMMY), THE REPRODUCIBILITY OF THE MEASUREMENT RESULTS AND THE GENERAL LIMITS OF PREDICTABILITY. FURTHER COMMENTS ARE TO BE EXPECTED FROM THE ACCIDENT ANALYSIS, AS TO WHETHER MEASUREMENTS FOR VEHICLE DEVELOPMENT WILL ACHIEVE THE SUCCESS AIMED AT.
