CHOICE OF DRIVERS FOR EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS

FAHRERAUSWAHL FUER EXPERIMENTELLE UNTERSUCHUNGEN

THE QUALITIES OF THE DRIVER AFFECT MOST OF THE CRITERIA WHICH CHARACTERISE THE STABILITY OF A MOTOR VEHICLE. FOR THIS REASON THE CONDITION OF THE WHOLE DRIVER-VEHICLE SYSTEM MUST BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION DURING EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS. IN A TEST TWO DRIVERS OF SIMILAR CHARACTER HAD TO BE SELECTED FROM A TOTAL OF 15. TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON A LEVEL CARRIAGEWAY. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE STANDARD DEVIATION FROM THE LARGEST BEND TO BE NEGOTIATED SHOWS A WIDE VARIATION OF DEPENDENCE ON THE DRIVERS. THE REASON FOR THIS CAN BE SEEN IN THE VARYING REFLEXES AND CONTROL QUALITIES OF THE INDIVIDUAL DRIVERS. WITH INCREASING SPEED THE MEAN VALUE OF THE STANDARD DEVIATION ALSO INCREASES, WHICH CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE FACT THAT THE REACTION TIME OF THE DRIVER REMAINS THE SAME WHILST THE SENSITIVITY OF THE VEHICLE INCREASES. THE CONTROL QUALITIES OF SOME DRIVERS ARE MUCH BETTER AT LOW SPEEDS THAN AT HIGH SPEEDS. IT CANNOT BE ESTABLISHED THAT CONTROL QUALITIES ARE DEPENDENT ON DRIVING EXPERIENCE OR THE OCCUPATION OF THE DRIVER. FOR TWO DRIVERS IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THEIR CONTROL QUALITIES CAN BE ASSUMED TO REMAIN CONSTANT OVER A PERIOD OF TWO MONTHS. THE CRITERIA OF THE PSYCHO-PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DRIVERS SHOWED SIMILAR TENDENCIES AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS, I.E. THE DRIVING CHARACTERISTIC OF THE DRIVER REMAINED CONSTANT.
