CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF VEHICLE FIRES

URSACHEN UND FOLGEN VON FAHRZEUGBRAENDEN

THE HUK-ASSOCIATION HAS DETERMINED THAT 0.24% OF ALL TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY ARE PRIVATE CAR FIRE ACCIDENTS AND THAT THE NUMBER OF FATALITIES IS TEN TIMES GREATER THAN THE AVERAGE. THE CAUSE OF FIRES IS NOT SO MUCH TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AS DEFECTS IN THE FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM SUCH AS LEAKING PETROL LINES, PETROL TANKS AND CARBURETTORS, DEFECTS IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND TYRE FAULTS; CAUSES OF FIRE UNCONNECTED WITH THE VEHICLE SUCH AS ARSON, PROXIMITY TO OPEN FIRES AND PARTICIPATION IN FIRES EMANATING FROM OTHER VEHICLES ARE A SMALL PROPORTION OF THE TOTAL. DANGER TO OCCUPANTS IS PARTICULARLY HIGH WHEN THE FIRE BREAKS OUT DURING A JOURNEY OR THE OCCUPANTS ARE UNABLE TO LEAVE A VEHICLE QUICKLY AFTER AN ACCIDENT DUE TO INJURIES. TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF VEHICLE FIRES DESIGNS SHOULD BE ACCORDING TO THE CODE-OF-PRACTICE OF THE STVZO BY WHICH SPECIAL FIRE-PROTECTIVE REQUIREMENTS ARE LAID DOWN FOR THE MATERIALS USED IN VEHICLE CONSTRUCTION, THE FORM OF THE VEHICLE PARTS AND THE PROTECTION OF ELECTRIC CABLES. IN ADDITION THE AVAILABLE ADVICE OF THE STVZO CONCERNING THE CONSTRUCTION AND HOUSING OF FUEL TANKS IN VEHICLES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED.
