THE IDENTIFICATION OF HIGH RISK DRINKING DRIVERS

DIE IDENTIFIZIERUNG VON HOCHGEFAEHRDETEN TRINKER-FAHRERN

IN THE USA INVESTIGATIONS HAVE TAKEN PLACE TO RECOGNISE INDIVIDUALS AS HIGH-RISK DRINKING DRIVERS. IT BECAME CLEAR DURING THIS RESEARCH THAT THE DRINK AND DRIVE PROBLEM IS PRESENT ESPECIALLY AMONGST MALES. FROM CONSIDERATION OF THE GENERALLY HIGH ACCIDENT PARTICIPATION OF YOUNG DRIVERS AND THEIR HIGH ALCOHOL LINKED ACCIDENT RATE IT MUST BE CONSIDERED THAT THESE MUST FIRST OF ALL LEARN TO DRIVE AND MUST ALSO LEARN TO DRIVE AFTER DRINKING. COMPARISON OF MARRIED DRIVERS TO UNMARRIED SHOWS THAT THE LATTER ARE MORE INVOLVED IN DRINK-DRIVE PROBLEMS, WHICH CAN ALSO BE SAID FOR DRIVERS IN THE LOWER TRADE AND OCCUPATION CLASSES. IN ADDITION IT CAN BE SHOWN THAT DRIVERS WITH ALCOHOL BASED PROBLEMS HAVE A HIGHER ACCIDENT PROBABILITY THAN RANDOM SELECTED DRIVERS. BY REFERENCE TO A QUANTITY-FREQUENCY INDEX WITH SEX, AGE, FAMILY STATUS AND DRINK- AND DRIVING-PATTERN IT APPEARS THAT THE MALE SHARE GROWS IN PROPORTION TO THE QUANTITY AND FREQUENCY OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION, THAT A HIGHER PROPORTION OF YOUNG DRIVERS MAY BE CLASSIFIED AS HEAVY, REGULAR DRINKERS, THAT THE PROPORTION OF MARRIED DRIVERS DECLINES IN PROPORTION TO RISING ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION AND THAT DRIVERS WHO FREQUENTLY DRINK MUCH ALCOHOL ALSO FREQUENTLY DRIVE AFTER DRINKING. THE FOUR VARIABLES: NUMBER OF CONVICTIONS FOR TRAFFIC OFFENCES, TRADE OR OCCUPATION CLASSIFICATION, FREQUENCY OF BEER DRINKING AND QUANTITY OF THE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES CONFIRM THE APPROPRIATE RECOGNITION OF DRUNKEN OFFENDERS. IT APPEARS PRUDENT THAT DRIVERS, WHO ARE FOR THE FIRST TIME CONVICTED OF DRUNKENNESS, SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED IN ORDER TO ASCERTAIN THEIR POTENTIAL FOR FURTHER DRINKING OFFENCES AND THOSE WHO, BY REFERENCE TO THIS ARE FOUND NOT TO BE AT RISK, SHOULD BE DIFFERENTIATED AND SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO REHABILITATION MEASURES OVER AND ABOVE THOSE FOR REPEATED DRUNKEN OFFENDERS.
