METHODS OF EXAMINING THE ALTERATIONS IN CHIPPINGS CAUSED BY FROST AND THEIR EVALUATION BY MEANS OF LABORATORY TESTS

THE METHOD OF EVALUATING THE FROST SENSITIVITY OF BALLAST CANNOT BE APPLIED TO CHIPPINGS IN ITS PRESENT FORM. AS PART OF THE INVESTIGATIONS THE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE METHODS OF DETERMINING POROSITY WERE EXAMINED IN FREEZE-THAW TESTS. THE WORK LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PYCNOMETER METHOD WHICH ENABLES THE VOLUME AND WATER ABSORPTION OF SMALL-GRAINED ROCK TO BE MEASURED. NUMEROUS FREEZE-THAW AND CRYSTALLIZATION TESTS WERE CONDUCTED AND MODIFICATIONS IN THE PROPERTIES OF THE ROCKS OR CHIPPINGS WERE ANALYZED. BASED ON THESE TESTS A METHODOLOGY WAS DEVELOPED FOR EVALUATING THE FROST SENSITIVITY OF NATURAL ROCK CHIPPINGS. /TRRL/
