THIS REPORT DEALS WITH THE CAUSES AND INTER-RELATIONSHIPS OF TRANSVERSE OSCILLATIONS OCCURRING IN FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES, AS WELL AS WITH POSSIBLE METHODS OF REDUCING THEM. TOPICS DEALT WITH INCLUDE: INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS ON TRANSVERSE OSCILLATION; ARRANGEMENT OF THE DRIVE-SHAFTS; RECORDINGS OF TRANSVERSE OSCILLATION CHARACTERISTICS OF DIFFERENT VEHICLES IN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR. THE TABULATED RESULTS OF OSCILLATION TEST MEASUREMENTS ARE DISCUSSED, AND THE PRINCIPAL TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION OF TWO- AND THREE-FINGER AS WELL AS BALL-TYPE CONSTANT-VELOCITY JOINTS ARE EXPLAINED. WHETHER ONE ACCEPTS THE CONCLUSION THAT TRANSVERSE OSCILLATION OF FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES IS CONSTRUCTIONALLY DETERMINED, OR DECIDES ON THIS BASIS TO INSTALL BALL-TYPE CONSTANT-VELOCITY JOINTS IS, BECAUSE OF THE SOMEWHAT HIGHER COST AND IN THE LIGHT OF SAFETY REQUIREMENTS, ABOVE ALL A PROBLEM IN ECONOMICS WHICH PARTICULARLY AFFECTS THE MANUFACTURING COSTS OF VEHICLES WHICH HAVE TRANSVERSE ENGINES.
