DRIVING STABILITY OF CARS WITH SINGLE AXLE CARAVAN TRAILERS

AT THE INSTITUTE FOR VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY OF THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF BRUNSWICK TESTS AND THEORETICAL RESEARCH HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT TO INVESTIGATE THE HANDLING OF CARS WITH SINGLE AXLE CARAVAN TRAILERS. AT HIGH SPEEDS CRITICAL HANDLING SITUATIONS CAN ARISE FROM LATERAL SWAYING OF THE TRAILER. THE PURPOSE OF THIS WORK WAS THEREFORE TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS ON THE HANDLING STABILITY. THE CAR-TRAILER COMPATIBILITY FOR DRIVING IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE IN THIS RESPECT AND RESULTS FROM CALCULATIONS INDICATE WHAT CONSIDERABLE INFLUENCE THE TRAILER CHARACTERISTICS HAVE. A SMALL MOMENT OF RESISTANCE TO YAWING AND A LONG TOW-BAR ARE PARTICULARLY FAVOURABLE. A HYDRAULIC OR FRICTIONAL KINK DAMPER COULD, IF PROPERLY USED, EFFECTIVELY REDUCE THE TENDENCY TO SWAY. THE DYNAMIC COMPATIBILITY OF CARAVAN TRAILERS AND CARS OF DIFFERENT SIZE CANNOT BE DESCRIBED BY A SINGLE MASS RATIO. FOR STABLE DRIVING THE CRITICAL MASS RATIO OF CARAVAN AND CAR IS GREATER FOR SMALLER VEHICLES THAN WITH LARGER CARS.
