INFLUENCE OF THE SHAPE OF CARS IN PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS

EINFLUSS DER GESTALTUNG DER PKW BEI FUSSGAENGERUNFAELLEN

AS THE NUMBER OF INJURED AND FATALLY INJURED CAR PASSENGERS COULD BE REDUCED BY IMPROVED CAR SAFETY FEATURES, INVESTIGATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT TO ESTABLISH THE INFLUENCE OF VEHICLE SHAPE IN VEHICLE-PEDESTRIAN COLLISIONS, TO BE ABLE TO TAKE SUITABLE MEASURES FOR MINIMIZING THE EFFECTS OF ACCIDENTS. THE DECISIVE FACTORS INFLUENCING THE RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT ARE, FIRSTLY THE IMPACT VELOCITY OF THE VEHICLE WITH THE PEDESTRIAN, SECONDLY THE PEDESTRIAN HIMSELF, BEING INDIVIDUALLY OF VARYING BUILD AND RESISTANCE. THE RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT IS ALSO INFLUENCED BY THE SHAPE OF THE VEHICLE; THREE TYPES ARE BEING DISTINGUISHED: THE TALL BOX SHAPE, GOODS VEHICLES, THE RECTANGULAR SHAPE OF THE PRIVATE CAR AND WEDGE SHAPE. ALL PARTICIPANTS CAN HELP TO REDUCE THE NUMBER AND SEVERITY OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS, PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICLE DRIVERS BY PAYING GREATER ATTENTION, VEHICLE ENGINEERS BY PRODUCING LESS DANGEROUS VEHICLE DESIGNS, BUT THE POSSIBILITIES HERE ARE COMPARATIVELY SMALL. LEGISLATION CONTAINS DIRECTIONS ALREADY FOR THE REMOVAL OF SHARP CONTOURS ON VEHICLE BODIES; DEMANDS BY THE ENGLISH GOVERNMENT FOR LOWER BUMPERS TO AVOID KNEE INJURIES, DUE TO IMPACT BETWEEN VEHICLE AND PEDESTRIAN, IS HARDLY POSSIBLE. IN TOWN PLANNING SPECIAL ATTENTION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO EXTENSIVE DIVISION BETWEEN PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICLE TRAFFIC.
