DRIVER IMPROVEMENT: UNUSED POSSIBILITIES FOR THE REHABILITATION OF RECIDIVIST DRIVERS

DRIVER IMPROVEMENT: UNGENUTZTE MOEGLICHKEITEN ZUR REHABILITATION AUFFAELLIGER KRAFTFAHRER

IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT DRIVERS WITH MANY ROAD TRAFFIC OFFENCES ALSO DISPLAY UNUSUAL BEHAVIOUR IN THEIR LIFE OFF THE ROAD AND THAT THEIR PERSONALITY STRUCTURE IS UNSTABLE. THESE DRIVERS, WHO ARE OFTEN JUDGED UNSUITABLE TO BE ON THE ROAD, MUST BE TREATED BY OTHER MEASURES. SUCH AIDS AS ROAD TRAFFIC CODES OR THE ADMONISHMENTS OF THE TRAFFIC AUTHORITIES ARE GENERALLY DISREGARDED BY RECIDIVIST DRIVERS. SUITABLE REHABILITATION MEASURES INCLUDE, FOR EXAMPLE, GROUP TALKS IN WHICH AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO ALTER THE PERCEPTION PATTERNS OF THE PARTICIPANTS AND THUS TO GIVE THEM A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEIR OWN BEHAVIOUR IN TRAFFIC AND THAT OF OTHER DRIVERS. THE PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE TAUGHT THE VALUE OF PARTNERSHIP AND TO UNDERSTAND THE NECESSITY TO TAKE OTHERS INTO CONSIDERATION. THE ABILITY OF THE INSTRUCTOR IN THIS CASE IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE AND HE SHOULD, AMONGST OTHER ATTRIBUTES, HAVE A THOROUGH TRAINING IN THE FIELD OF TRAFFIC PSYCHOLOGY. THE NECESSARY CLEAR JUDICIAL PREREQUISITES FOR SUCH REHABILITATION MEASURES HAVE YET TO BE DEVELOPED, SO THAT THE FURTHERANCE OF THESE IMPORTANT CONCEPTS CAN BE ACHIEVED.
