SMOKING WHILE DRIVING?

RAUCHEN AM STEUER?

THE EFFECTS WHICH SMOKING IN A CAR HAVE ON THE DRIVING CAPACITY OF A DRIVER, ARE FIRSTLY THE REDUCTION IN THE REACTION CAPABILITY ARISING FROM THE HIGHER CONCENTRATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE CAR INTERIOR. FURTHERMORE, THE ATTENTIVENESS OF THE DRIVER WHO LIGHTS UP A CIGARETTE WHILE DRIVING IS AFFECTED BY UNPREDICTABLE COMPLICATIONS SUCH AS LOOKING FOR THE CIGARETTE PACKAGE AND OPENING IT AND THIS DISTRACTS ATTENTION FROM TRAFFIC. THE LIGHTING OF THE CIGARETTE ITSELF IS GREATLY SIMPLIFIED IN MOST CARS WHICH ARE FITTED WITH CIGARETTE LIGHTERS AS STANDARD. SIMILAR EFFECTS ARISE WHEN THE PASSENGER ONLY SMOKES. THE DRIVER MUST BE EXPECTED TO BE AWARE OF THE RISKS ATTACHED TO SMOKING IN CARS AND THAT IT IS UNLIKELY THAT HE WOULD BE TREATED LIGHTLY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT RESULTING FROM SUCH BEHAVIOUR. THE EXISTING BAN ON SMOKING FOR DRIVERS OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES SHOULD, THEREFORE, BE EXTENDED TO CERTAIN TRAFFIC SITUATIONS WHERE THE DRIVER REQUIRES INCREASED ATTENTIVENESS, SUCH AS DRIVING ON MOTORWAYS AND IN HEAVY CITY TRAFFIC.
