QUESTIONS REGARDING RESEARCH INTO STRESS ON DRIVERS

FRAGEN AN DIE ERFORSCHUNG DES STRESS BEIM AUTOFAHREN

A STUDY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT INTO THE BASIS OF PHYSICAL AND PSYCHIC STRESS ON DRIVERS, COVERING BOTH RACING DRIVERS AND NON-PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS. IT EMERGED THAT THE STRESS ON CITY DRIVERS AND ON MAIN ROAD DRIVERS IS GREATER THAN THAT ON THOSE ON MOTORWAYS. RACING DRIVERS DISPLAYED SIGNS OF EXTREME STRESS, SUCH AS GREATLY INCREASED ADRENALIN PRODUCTION AND HEART BEAT, WHICH ARE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ORIGIN, SO THAT ONE MUST CONSIDER THAN EVEN IN A STATIONARY STATE THEY WOULD SHOW HIGHER LEVELS THAN OTHER DRIVERS. THE PRODUCTION OF STRESS WAS FOUND NOT TO BE DUE TO PHYSICAL EXERTIONS BUT TO EMOTIONAL TENSION. FURTHER RESEARCH IS NOW UNDERWAY TO DETERMINE THE DEGREE TO WHICH CONFLICT SITUATIONS AFFECTS THE STRESS ON DRIVERS BOTH ON MOTORWAYS AND IN CITIES AND THE DEGREE TO WHICH CONFLICT CAN BE REDUCED IN THE DRIVING OF A MEDIUM CLASS VEHICLE ON MOTORWAYS. FURTHERMORE, THE INFLUENCE OF THE TEST DRIVE ITSELF ON THE TEST RESULTS MUST BE STUDIED.
