THE AVOIDANCE OF INJURIES TO PEDESTRIANS: AN INTER-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH PROBLEM

VERMEIDUNG VON FUSSGAENGERVERLETZUNGEN: EIN INTERDISZIPLINAERES FORSCHUNGSPROBLEM

IN THE RECONSTRUCTION OF INJURIES TO PEDESTRIANS IT EMERGED THAT THE INJURIES SUSTAINED BY THE PEDESTRIANS IN CONNECTION WITH AN IMPACT WITH A VEHICLE WERE LESS SEVERE WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT BRAKED DURING THE COLLISION PHASE AND THEREAFTER. THE PROCESS BY MEANS OF WHICH THE PEDESTRIAN WAS THROWN ON TO THE STREET AND SUSTAINED A SECONDARY IMPACT IN WHICH HE WAS AS SEVERELY INJURED IF NOT MORE SO THAN IN THE FIRST COLLISION, CAN BE AVOIDED BY THE NON-BRAKING OF THE VEHICLE. AS THE BRAKING OF A VEHICLE IS, HOWEVER, INSTINCTIVE WHERE A PEDESTRIAN APPEARS SUDDENLY, IT IS HARDLY POSSIBLE TO INHIBIT THIS REACTION BY THE DRIVER. THUS, OTHER SOLUTIONS MUST BE STUDIED, SUCH AS THE EQUIPPING OF MOTOR VEHICLES WITH A SYSTEM FOR CATCHING PEDESTRIANS.
