FRANCE'S CHRONIC ILLNESS

FRANKREICHS CHRONISCHE KRANKHEIT

FRANCE'S CHRONIC ILLNESS IS ALCOHOLISM. THE PRESSURE TOWARDS EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION IS INTENSE BECAUSE OF MASSIVE ADVERTISING. ALCOHOL IN FRANCE IS AN ECONOMIC POWER. PRODUCTION AND TRADE IN ALCOHOL IS A MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE MILLION PEOPLE. FRANCE IS THE GREATEST WINE COUNTRY. ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION IS AN IMPORTANT CAUSE FOR THE INCREASED DEATH RATE IN CERTAIN MALE AGE GROUPS. THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL IS ALSO DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 35% OF ALL MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS AND FOR 15% OF ALL INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS. THE MAIN ALCOHOLIC DRINK IS WINE. THOSE ADDICTED CONSUME BETWEEN FOUR AND FIVE LITRES DAILY. MANY VOCATIONAL GROUPS ARE PARTICULARLY PRONE TO ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION. THE MOTIVATIONS FOR DRINKING ARE LEGION. MEASURES FOR COMBATTING THIS PROBLEM HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BUT ARE NOT YET SUFFICIENTLY EXTENSIVE. THE INSTITUTIONS INVOLVED ARE TOO SMALL IN NUMBER. THEIR EXTENSION IS DESIRABLE FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF TRAFFIC SAFETY.
