THE HANDLING OF A TWO-WHEELED VEHICLE

IN THIS PAPER, MOVEMENTS OF THE BICYCLE AND THE REACTIONS OF THE RIDER ON THE SINGLE TRACK VEHICLE WERE MEASURED ON THE BASIS OF DRIVING EXPERIMENTS. THE EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH A MOTORCYCLE ON A CIRCULAR TEST TRACK. DURING A RUN THE TRAVEL SPEED WAS ALWAYS KEPT CONSTANT. SOME MOVEMENTS OF THE VEHICLE WERE MEASURED, I.E. THE ANGULAR VELOCITY OF ROLL AND THE ANGULAR VELOCITY OF YAW. THE REACTIONS OF THE RIDER WERE MEASURED, I.E. THE ANGULAR VELOCITY OF THE UPPER PART OF THE BODY, STEERING MOMENT AND THE STEERING ANGULAR VELOCITY. DURING THE EVALUATION THE ANGULAR VELOCITY WAS INTEGRATED ANALOGOUSLY. THE RESULTS OBTAINED SHOW VARIOUS SPEED-DEPENDENT PHENOMENA OF THE CYCLE WHICH OCCUR WHEN ENTERING A BEND, DURING THE STEADY PART OF THE RUN AND WHEN LEAVING A BEND, AND THEY GIVE AN INDICATION OF VEHICLE HANDLING IN RELATION TO TRAVELLING SPEED DURING THE PROCESS OF MAINTAINING EQUILIBRIUM.
